Most of the time, the VPS you purchase will come without a cPanel (generally, cPanel means control panel (to help manage the server) but also refers to a specific brand of control panel, which is named literally cPanel), but generally speaking a cPanel VPS makes it much, much easier to manage the server. Depending on the VPS you purchase (specifically, the Operating System), there will be different options available to you.
The most common cPanel currently in use is actually the brand, cPanel, followed closely by Plesk. Both of these are licensed products, with different options available themselves. In our VPS plans, the cPanel VPS option adds an additional $9.95/month, while the Plesk Control Panel adds from 4.95-$9.99/month, depending on the specific VPS cPanel upgrades selected. There is also a slight difference in how the cPanel itself interfaces with the server. For example, Plesk is considered to be much, much more robust (the Plesk for Small Business control panel even includes site building options). The cPanel control panel is more widely documented though, and seems to be more popular and in much wider use than Plesk. cPanel also seems to have a lighter load on the server.
When considering what cPanel VPS you are actually going to use, it is important to make this decision before purchasing the server. Since the cPanel is part of the base server configuration in most cases, the cPanel itself is part of the provisioning process. Therefore, switching the VPS cPanel is not a simple matter of installing new software. Most VPS Hosting companies will require a reprovision if you change the brand of VPS cPanel you are using.
There are free VPS cPanels available as well. If your server is running Linux, you can pre-configure our Simple Control Panel for your VPS. Alternatively, both Linux and Windows VPS Plans can be configured without a control panel entirely. Choosing to not use a VPS cPanel might make management more challenging unless you are very familiar with the server environment and some of the details that go along with basic VPS management.

VPS cPanel Hosting allows the server administrator to address the concerns frequently brought up through web server management specifically for use as a web hosting server. VPS cPanel Hosting allows the web master to easily assign additional users (if required) for FTP as well as Server Management, and also create additional databases depending on what the server will allow. The VPS manager should know their cPanel controls very well, but mostly will already be familiar with the basics of server management. The VPS Hosting cPanel should make the job easier then, as long as the admin already knows their stuff. Specifically in the hosting environment though, one consideration debated among some server admins that are already very knowledgeable about server management is the need for a cPanel VPS to begin with. The control panel for the server does make management easier, but technically uses resources that can be better allocated towards web hosting in general. The zealots among the server admin crowd therefore argue against the need for a cPanel to begin with. While technically accurate (any control panel does take up some extra resources, by it’s very nature), servers today are much more sophisticated and the hardware (even that which is available for even the low-end VPS) is more than adequate of older servers that might have had a slight concern with resources in general.

The owner of the dedicated server becomes a slave to the individual VPS sub-lessee’s, similar to a tenant/owner relationship when you rent a house or apartment. You might end up “fixing” everything that your tenants break because they have no clue how to manage a VPS. Also, the server owner is responsible for managing billing and tech support calls at 3am… (NOT the recommended way to be a VPS Reseller)

Pre-purchase VPS Reseller Plan

The pre-purchase type of VPS reseller plan requires that you purchase a group of VPS Servers at-cost, and then resell at whatever markup you choose. This type of reseller program has the obvious disadvantage that you can DEFINITELY lose money if you are not moving servers fast enough. In a sense, you are basically “sub-leasing” and then re-selling this lease to other parties. This used to be the “preferred” method of becoming a VPS reseller (not MUCH technical involvement required) but the best option is a managed VPS reseller account (which is what I currently provide services through and it works amazingly well (read below).
